Internet as our playground: can we go back?

Last week we celebrated Queensday in The Netherlands, reason enough for a lot of people to go out and have fun. Though, to the majority it seemed like fun has to go along with alcohol...sigh! Anyways, I also went out with some friends and we spent most of our times trying to get ourselves from one spot to another, but still able to take some fun pics.

The day after, I decided to share the pictures with these friends on my Facebook page as expected, but the fact that I got the feeling that I HAD to share these pictures made me wonder. When did this started, my life on the internet? Not mine only, but for a lot of people? What drives us to share what we eat, where we are at a certain moment, who we are in a relationship with and if and when it ended, look for partners on the net etc. Made me realize how obsessed people are with the internet nowadays, including myself.
What would my world look like today without social media? Not saying the internet is only for fun and showing off, just discussing this part of it's function...

But why do we NEED the internet?

I can actually think of a lot of reasons like, needing attention (heard this so often, but don't we all?), showing the world how 'good' our lives are. Off course, all positive things! People simply want to be seen, to be noticed! It's in our NATURE. I guess we do choose to have a little privacy when it comes to things we really don't want others to know about us. Well, ain't we human ;) No need to deny there's a group that doesn't want anything to do with Facebook or other Social media...are they the ones with both feet on the ground?...lol...

Today I read a comment on FB about someone who hated the fact that, whenever she logs on on FB, she has to read about her friends talking about their haters all the time and she was soooo tired of it! And she said it's always the hater himself complaining about other so called haters. These people wanted to get a lot of attention and she was NOT gonna be their audience...

So my question is: isn't everything (positive or negative) we drop on the internet, especialy on social media, something about us we want others to know? Even if we comment on someone's status...we want them to know what we think about a certain issue. Even when it's a topic in a newspaper we are shocked about...come on, some people do follow the news. When we refer to news, shocking or not, we want others to know how this affects us or not, just how we think about it! So we all do crave for attention in our own way! How hypocritical can we be than? But of course, even judging is something we often don't want to do, but we still do!

Anyway, fact is, we have moved (part of) our personal lives to the internet, our second playground, our second reality. Why is mobile internet so popular these days? We take it everywhere we go! But also, in real life, we need a vacation sometimes...isn't that the same reason we now and then need to step back from social media?

Still wonder if we can or want to go back? Actually, what was the internet like without social media? Can NOT remember! Can you?
